2024 was the fourth year of Sport Ireland's HER Outdoors week and was a great success, with more events than ever before, showcasing Galway's coastal and mountain landscapes. The initiative aims to encourage more females to participate in outdoor activities and highlights the importance of outdoor recreation for physical and mental health, social inclusion, nature connectedness, environmental awareness, and community cohesion.
This year's focus extended to recognising those who deliver, volunteer, coach, educate, and instruct in clubs and the outdoor industry in Galway, with many female-owned and run businesses involved. Galway Sports Partnership collaborated with clubs and education centers with strong female representation.
Despite some uncooperative late summer weather, 22 events took place across various locations in Galway City and County. A total of 278 women and girls registered, with 203 attendees participating in activities such as sea dips, snorkelling, kayaking, windsurfing, paddle sports, sailing, rowing, orienteering, forest hikes, outdoor yoga, cycling, and trail running.
